Plan your time outside
Choose a route that fits your group. Check conditions, pack well and leave room to change your plan.
Three things before you leave
Check conditions. Confirm closures, fees, reservations, route length, surfaces, parking and facilities. Check the Waco-area forecast.
Pack the essentials. Water, sun protection, suitable shoes, snacks, basic first aid, a downloaded map and a charged phone. Add a bike helmet or fitted life jacket for your activity.
Share your plan. Tell someone your route and expected return; phone service is not guaranteed.
Match your plan to the day
Heat & sun
Choose cooler hours, slow down and take cooling breaks. Bring water rather than relying on fountains. Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle. NWS heat guidance.
Thunder & high water
Hear thunder? Go into a substantial enclosed building or hard-topped vehicle. Trees and picnic shelters are unsafe lightning shelter. Wait 30 minutes after the last thunder. Respect flooded areas and closures. NWS lightning guidance.
On the water
Wear a fitted life jacket and check wind, water levels and official launch access. A boat launch is not a swimming area. Lake Waco swimming beaches are Airport Beach and Twin Bridges, only when open.

Access for your group
Ask about specific surfaces, slopes, restrooms and parking. Waco Mammoth documents wheelchair, scooter and stroller access to its facilities. Mother Neff offers all-terrain wheelchair information; confirm availability and suitable routes.

Care for shared places
Stay on designated routes, carry out litter, give wildlife space and leave plants, rocks and fossils in place. Follow fire restrictions and pet rules. In an emergency, call 911 and describe your location and access point.
